Sunday Service: Katherine Dunham

  • NorthStar Church of the Arts 220 West Geer Street Durham, NC, 27701 United States (map)

Join us for a soul-stirring Sunday Service celebrating the legacy of Katherine Dunham: dancer, anthropologist, choreographer, and revolutionary artist. Guided by the wisdom of Dunham’s radical kinesthetic practice, artist and healer Ifasina Clear will lead us through a reflection on the body as an archive, a site of resistance, and a vessel of transformation.

Katherine Dunham was not only one of the most influential dancers of the 20th century, but also a cultural worker who deeply understood the political power of movement. She preserved Afro-Caribbean and diasporic traditions through her technique, research, and choreographic work, refusing to sever art from its spiritual and historical roots.

Through somatic practice, music, and ritual, we will explore what it means to reclaim joy and move together toward liberation.

This offering is part of our ongoing Sunday Service series at NorthStar, where we draw wisdom from revolutionary ancestors to imagine freer futures.
